Late 19th Century Chinese Wedding Cabinet

About the Item

An antique wedding cabinet from Zhejiang province, with beautiful original red lacquer, and original round brass plate and door pulls. This round brass plate is especially large and measures 51.5cm in diameter. It has shallow engravings around the perimeter of phoenix, peonies, Buddha's citron fruits and auspicious knots. The floating panel on each door consists of two Jumu (southern Elmwood) panels joined in the middle. The bottom most shelf lifts up to reveal a secret compartment below. The height of the opening above the drawers is 37cm, the middle shelf below the drawers is 27.5cm high, and the bottom shelf height (above the secret compartment) is 25cm. The carving on top features a pair of dragons on both sides of a flaming pearl in the middle, and flower branches on both ends. The painting in the middle features a pair of lions on both sides of a ball with flowing ribbons, followed by phoenix and peonies. The painting along the vertical frame on both sides shows (from top to bottom): a bat (good fortune), fishes (abundance), auspicious knot (good luck), parasol (protection), peaches (longevity), Buddha's citron fruit (prosperity & longevity).
