About the Item
An absolutely lovely Korean black lacquer and abalone shell inlaid box in the form of a pair of Mandarin ducks, early 20th century, Korea.
The two part box formed as a pair of intertwined Mandarin ducks, a shared piece of vegetation grasped between their beaks. Mandarin ducks are a symbol of love and fidelity in Asian culture, stemming from the popular belief that Mandarin ducks mate for life.
The ducks crafted in black lacquer, and inlaid with brilliant flakes of abalone shell, the shells catching the light to reflect a rainbow of colors. The top section of the box, feature the heads of the ducks. The tops of the heads each inlaid with a single floret surrounded by stylized yeo ui. The eyes and bills outlined with inlaid gold wire. Small scattered flakes of abalone shell decorate the vegetation.
The bottom section of the box inlaid with more abalone shell in a striking geometric pattern.
