About the Item

A magnificent example of Japanese metal artistry, this hand-hammered copper vase was created by the renowned workshop Gyokusendō (玉川堂), known for preserving centuries-old tsuiki (鎚起) techniques — a traditional method of shaping metal with thousands of hammer strikes. This particular vase features a faceted ovoid form and a richly iridescent patina, with hues of blue, bronze, and gold emerging organically across the hammered surface. The finish is created without artificial coloring — a result of complex heating and oxidizing processes unique to Gyokusendō’s proprietary methods. The base bears the original red seal (刻印), and the vase is accompanied by: • Its original kiribako (signed paulownia wood box), marked: 翔荒花瓶 (Shōkō Kabin – “Soaring Wild Flower Vase”) • Authentic paper documentation from Gyokusendō, indicating its manufacture in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, and listing it among traditional copperware items such as kettles and incense burners • Care instructions and maker’s background included Dimensions: 20x20x21 cm Material: Pure hand-hammered copper Signature: Stamped Gyokusendō (玉川堂) with seal Condition: Excellent, with natural iridescent patina and no structural issues Provenance: With original box and Gyokusendō documentation
