Korean Folding Chaekgeori Painted Scholar Floor Screen
Located in Atlanta, GA
A six-panel painted folding floor screen from Korea circa early 20th century. This type of screen is called Chaekgeori (books and things) which is quite unique to Korea. It became popular at the end of 18th century favored and encouraged by King Jeongjo (1752-1800) as a political tool to promote social conservatism such as the traditional Confucianism value, especially considered important in a time when waves of new ideology influx came to Korea. Initially commissioned for the royal court, they became increasingly popular with the scholars of noble and affluent household and used it widely in their halls and studies. Early screens were painted with trompe-l’oeil bookcases displaying books and arrays of collectibles. Later, the bookcases were eliminated to focus on the assemblage of neatly stacked books and objects of scholarly pursue. On this screen, the six panels were neatly presented and framed in woven brocade borders. Among the stacked volumes, one can find many fine porcelain vases with flowers, potted orchids, pen holders with brush pens and scroll paintings, incense burner, ink stone, teapot, fan with ink painting, vessels of fruits, exotic plants such as lotus, plumeria and even a pair of glasses. It feels like a pleasant visual measure hunting for the viewers. Several words in Chinese found their way into the picture as well, including filial (xiao), longevity (shou) and luck (fu).
The painting was done in a meticulous way with no details overlooked and also with a rather western still-life dimensional perspective. In a rather unusual maximal but also minimalistic way, the screen exudes a folky charm but appears modern at the same time.
Each panel is 17.5"w by 70.2"h.

Frame is original to the painting and of the period.
The painter is most likely Seitaro Kitayama (Japanese, 1888-1945), an important figure in late Meiji period credited with being the father of Japanese animation before Walt Disney started his company.
The painting style is impressionism which was keenly followed by a new generation of Japanese artists who either traveled to Europe for training or received Western publications on artists and gallery shows at home.
Kitayama, Seitaro was born on March 3, 1888 in Wakayama, and died on February 13, 1945.
In 1911, Kitayama became an apprentice to Tojiro Oshita and, while studying painting, also helped out with editing the art magazine Mizue. He soon moved to Tokyo and established the Western Art Guild of Japan and published Contemporary Western Art. He later joined the Fusain Art Group as a manager where he would support young western-style artists such as Ryusei Kishida and Sohachi Kimura by providing art supplies, in addition to holding exhibitions and publishing catalogues. On the other hand, he entered the Nikkatsu Mukojima Studio in 1916, proposed the inclusion of illustrations in intertitles, and made this his work. Entitled in English "Morning Practice in California", this series of work was painted in 2017 when the artist resided in US. The Chinese title inscription is "Blossom Branch" with artist's name signed in both Chinese and English. The painting is considered "Expressionistic-abstract". Using only various shades of ink, the poetic work depicts a large lotus flower with the pistil in the center composed of clusters of mediating arhats, the beings who have gained nirvana through Buddhism practice (known as Luohans in Chinese). There is a strong association of lotus flower and purity in Buddhism. The wisdom one can possibly achieve may be considered omnipresent and morphogenetical quantum and be part of everything around us. The image size is 13.5" x 13.5".

Antique Asian Paintings and Screens
Traditional Asian paintings were often created on scrolls and folding screens. Artisans made screens that could be folded up or spread out by connecting several panels using hinges. Today, antique Asian folding screens and paintings are sophisticated decorative accents that can serve as makeshift partitions to ensure privacy.
The original folding screens were created by Chinese artists. The earliest record of screens comes from the 2nd century B.C., and surviving examples date back to the Ming dynasty. Chinese painting utilizes many of the same tools as calligraphy — these screens were crafted from wood with painted panels featuring striking art or calligraphy that told cultural stories or represented nature and life in the area.
The practice was introduced to Japan, where paintings for screens were made on paper and silk, in the 8th century. These paintings frequently feature subjects such as landscapes, animals, flowers and Buddhist religious themes. Along with screens for tea ceremonies and dance backgrounds, there were screens for use in Shinto and Buddhist temples.
In the 17th century, screens began to be imported to Europe where their popularity grew. Coco Chanel famously collected Coromandel folding screens.
