Haku Maki
Maki Haku is the artistic name of Maejima Tadaaki, who was born in Ibaraki Prefecture. He was a sōsaku-hanga artist in the 20th century. During World War II, he was trained as a kamikaze pilot in the Japanese air force, but the war ended before he was assigned a mission. Haku had no formal art training but studied for two years with the sōsaku-hanga artist Onchi Kōshirō. In 1962, he started adding texture to his prints. In 1965, he began embossing designs into an unprinted paper by using a press to transfer a design created in cement on a carved plywood board and then adding color with stencils. Maki Haku participated in the Tokyo International Print Biennale in 1957–60. The Art Institute of Chicago, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art are among the public collections holding prints by Maki Haku.
- Junichiro Sekino Signed Japanese Limited Edition Woodblock Print AquariumBy Junichiro SekinoLocated in Studio City, CAA wonderfully composed and richly colored, limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Junichiro Sekino. This print, which is titled "Aquarium", is signed and sealed/ stamped in red at the lower right. We believe this was created in 1956 although it could have been made in 1946 (there are some conflicting dates on this image but we assume 1956 is correct) and comes from a limited edition of 50 prints (the exact number of this particular print and date/year is likely listed in pencil below the matt but we have not removed the print from the frame to confirm the exact number/year). The very image is widely considered by many Sekino critics and scholars to be one of Sekino's masterpieces. It is an exquisite and rare/hard-to-find work. Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including: The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world. Would be a fantastic addition to any modern Japanese print...Category

- 1960 Big Boys, Woodblock Print by Tomio Kinoshita, JapanBy Tomio KinoshitaLocated in Point Richmond, CATomio Kinoshita (1923 – 2014) Big Boys, 1960 Woodblock print Image size: 32.75 high by 22 inches wide (83 by 56 cm) Paper size: 35.5 high by 23.75 inches wide (90 by 60.3 cm) Signed: in pencil lower right, Tomio Kinoshita Titled: in pencil at lower left Edition: 30/50 Condition: Very good The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images. One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...Category
