About the Item

This Chinese snuff bottle is a delicate and vibrant piece, crafted from milk glass and adorned with enamel painting. The bottle features a cabochon jade stopper, adding a touch of elegance and luxury to the piece. On each side of the bottle, there is a finely detailed scene depicting a colorful pair of birds amidst a tree, a common motif in Chinese art symbolizing joy, freedom, and the beauty of nature. One side is titled "二雀图" (Er Que Tu), and the other "松寿图" (Song Shou Tu) , each rendered in elegant cursive script. These titles refer to the themes depicted in the scenes, with "松寿图" alluding to the pine tree's symbolism of longevity and endurance, and "二雀图" bearing a more literal descriptive meaning, for the pair of birds featured in the scene. The bottle is dated "丙子年" (Bing Zi Nian, or 1936 as per cyclical calendar) providing a precise historical context for the piece. The artist's seal is applied in red in three locations, a traditional way of signing and authenticating Chinese artworks. The bottom of the bottle bears a three-character mark "古月轩" (Gu Yue Xuan), or Old Moon Pavilion, in blue. This mark adds to the bottle's provenance and may indicate the workshop or artist's studio where it was created. This enamel on milk glass snuff bottle, with its intricate bird scenes, jade stopper, and historical markings, is a beautiful representation of Chinese artistry and culture from the late 20th century. It would be a prized addition to any collection of Chinese snuff bottles or enamel works. circa: 1990s, late 20c
