Buddha - A very large bronze figure of Sho Kannon. Japan, Meiji period 1868-1912

About the Item

Standing on a double lotus above an octagonal pedestal, holding a lotus bud and leaf in the left hand, the right hand hangs down in varadamudra, the shawl covers the shoulders and crosses the chest to form long loops at the lower part of the body, a diadem displaying the figure of Shakyamuni is attached in front of the chignon, a halo is inserted into the back. Height 188.5 cm Provenance: Property of Eugen Diesel (1889-1970) and thence by decent. Anna- Luise Diesel at the reception in the home of the Yamaoka family, Osaka 1954.The offered figure is in the background on the right. Eugen Diesel (May 3, 1889 in Paris – September 22, 1970 in Rosenheim) was a German writer. He was the son of Rudolf and Louise Martha Diesel (nee Flaschen). Diesel lived in Potsdam from 1925, after his marriage to Anna Luise Countess von Waldersee, until 1939 and worked as a freelance writer. He lived there in the manor house of the Bornstedt crown estate. Diesel wrote numerous cultural-philosophical works, such as 1933 We and the Car, 1939 The Phenomenon of Technology, 1950 The Dangerous Century. His approach, which is critical of civilization and science, is based on processes of alienation/reification, but not in the sense of backward-looking Luddites, but in search of social and societal perspectives. Rudolf Diesel: Rudolf Diesel is the inventor of the internal combustion engine bearing his name, designed to run on vegetable oil and not diesel. Diesel initially called this engine the “oil engine”. Rudolf Diesel is also a great thermal engineer, connoisseur of the arts, linguist and social theorist.
