Chinese Scholars Bamboo Brush Pot or Bitong Finely Carved Signed, Qing

About

This is a finely hand-carved Chinese bamboo scholars brush pot or bitong which we date to the mid-19th century of the Qing dynasty, circa 1850, but could be earlier. The bamboo has been intricately hand-carved in four different alternating scenes; One scene shows two seated figures beneath a tree. The second scene is of a mythical oriental bird, the phoenix or Fenghuang, facing left all within an oval The third scene shows three figures; one seated sage and two attendants all beneath a tree beside a house and with a border design below. The fourth scene shows another phoenix mythical bird, facing right, again within an oval There is a carved double ring border just above the base and an upper continuous border pattern below the top rim. The pot has been cut to form an indented foot at its base. The design carving varies in depth and is fairly deep in places. The bamboo has developed a deep rich patina on the outer surfaces and the bamboo has some vertical age and use related splits in places as per the images There is a signed mark to the base. ******************************** FREE GLOBAL SHIPPING ************************************.
