Japanese Antique Wood Carving Daruma 1860s-1900s / Sculpture Mingei Wabi Sabi

About the Item

This is a very old wooden Daruma doll. It was made during the Meiji period (1860s-1900s). The material is cedar wood. A wooden model of Daruma doll. Many Daruma dolls were mass-produced using this wooden pattern. Even though it has completed its role, it remains here as a wonderful objet d'art. The expression on his face is very good. The glossy taste is also beautiful. From this item, I feel the spirit of wabi-sabi, the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. It is a modest and humble beauty, the beauty of the unconventional, the opposite of vulgarity. It weighs 200g. Since ancient times, people have created and inherited necessary tools from familiar materials to survive in the severe struggle against nature, and have nurtured a lifestyle culture. Over a long period of time, the tools accumulate a certain flavor and reflect the way of life. The harsher the natural environment and the weaker the human being, the stronger the power of the tool. In today's world, where cheap and disposable products are encouraged, the act of repeatedly modifying and re-creating the things around us opens up a new world. With this philosophy in mind, we carefully select and collect beautiful, powerful, and unique Japanese antiques.
