About

A fine and sensitively carved, lacquered and giltwood Japanese Buddha depicting Amida Raigo, Edo period, early 19th century. The Buddha stands upon a double lotus pedestal, hands in abhaya mudra and varada, the gestures of reassurance and fulfilment. He wears traditional robes which wrap and drape around his robust body, his broad chest bare. His warm and full face set in a subtle, knowing smile. A small rock crystal sphere has been set into the urna, and another one at the base of the ushnisha. A large mandorla or nimbus frames the Buddha. The mandorla carved with a dense cloud design and a lotus blossom centered behind the Buddha's head. Amida Raigo is a depiction of Amida Buddha particular to Japan. The image represents Amida Buddha descending from the Western Paradise to welcome the newly deceased to the Pure Land. He is a sign of hope and comfort not only to the dying, but to the loved ones they leave behind as well.
