Japanese Massive Bronze Calming Trophy Koi Fish, Signed

About the Item

A giant hand cast serene bronze trophy koi fish sculpture Yuuri signifying calm and comfort by Japanese master metal artist, Ota Ryohei. Signed on base official label still present. Original and official documents included. The large scale 22.5 inch long caste bronze fish sculpture is symbolic of prosperity, perseverance and good fortune. Japanese Showa period (1926-1989). Its massive size weighs over 12 pounds. Conceived with a purposeful sea green varigated patina ,the second of this massive size and form we have ever encountered, was caste in a tranquil life like manner as if it is realistically peacefully swimming along the bottom depths of a pond or lake. It is naturally quite stunningly heavy with excellent head, eyes, scales, and fin details. Fine condition, including its original wooden storage box tomobako with documents. Dimensions: 22.5 inches in length and 7 inches high and 7 inches deep About Artist Ota Ryohei (1913-1997) His list of awards and honors are numerous: Two art museums in Japan exhibit his works of art. 1936 he received first prize on Teiten and multiple awards at the prestigious Nitten 1953-1954 continues 2 years he won special prizes at Nitten 1960- became a Nitten Judge and counselor . 1997 - passed away on Heisei 9th . ( 1997) Provenance: private northern Japanese collection Only one. History of Koi Japanese carp, or koi, as they are called, are said to symbolize fighting spirit, due to their hardy nature. Yet, because “koi” is a synonym for the Japanese word for “love,” in a linguistic sense they can also be linked to thoughts of calming beauty and romance. Many of the attributes of the Koi symbolize prosperity and success including several lessons individuals often encounter in life. The Koi fish has a powerful and energetic life force, demonstrated by its ability to swim against currents and even travel upstream.
