Japanese Rare Pair of Protection Nyoirin Kanon Protectors of Mankind

About

Unusual pair Nyoirin Kanon depictions protectors of mankind. These scarce and lovely Japanese temple finds, a pair of gold gilt and lacquered wooden Kanon, Guan yin and Bodhisattva, standing tall and with multiple arms and hands in assisting sentient beings around the world. These among others, symbolically signify compassion and healing powers. One holds a staff of life and the other a potion bottle of compassion. They are signed front and back in red lacquer with posthumous Buddhist names- a feature rarely found today. Kannon, or Kuanyin, is the bodhisattva of compassion, known in male form as Avalokitehvara or Chenrezig. Kuanyin's name means "the one who hears the cries of the world." Sometimes a Guan yin statue is depicted with a "thousand" arms and hands. This is because it's said her head split open ten times in succession when she saw the suffering of the world, and Amitabbha gave her one extra head and many arms in order to save all suffering sentient beings. The lacquer and its meticulously carved rock out crop symbolized bases are exquisite examples of the revival of traditional crafts from the early Edo period. Her surfaces are gorgeously covered with gold leaf with an intricate hemp-leaf pattern. Finally a fine perforated cut metal jewelry like necklace was added- these rarely survive from great age. We acquired them from a large Japanese collection this past year from one of our many buying trips. Dimensions: Each 16.5 inches tall and 5 inches wide Possibilities: They would look perfect indoors in your special tokonoma (Japanese alcove), shrine, or mediation space. About Kanon: A Japanese name for Guanyin, an East Asian bodhisattva and spiritual figure associated with mercy and compassion Lifetime guarantee of authenticity: All of our Asian works of art come with our Lifetime authenticity guarantee.
