Japanese Tall Antique Five Elements Stone Pagoda, 10 feet

About the Item

Fine Garden Sculpture A spiritual representation of five earthly and celestial elements destined for a fine garden. This Japanese monumental antique stone pagoda tower is about four meters or 128” tall. It is hand carved from solid granite from the mid Showa period circa 1940s. The sculpture spiritually represents our five earthly and celestial elements. And this pagoda is similar to the taller example given by Sapporo, Japan to the Portland, Oregon Japanese garden (See Portland's Japanese Garden Pagoda , Last Photo). Stone Details The monumental carved stone Buddhist sculptural five layered tower fashioned in thirteen parts with a tall incised ringed finial Hoju representative of five elements known as earth, wind, fire, water, and ethereal space; five sets of hexagonal shaped roofs, and a stepped altar platform all mounted on a four legged base and hand-carved of a granite stone with patina from appropriate age. Provenance: Old Japanese garden and private collection. Interested? Call or email us to reserve or make an appointment to see at our Vermont garden gallery, It is one-of-a-kind. Japan’s Pagodas Japan’s stone pagodas were the Japanese Buddhist versions of Chinese pagodas and originally Indian stupas. By the Meiji era, the word came to mean tower and a pagoda's size was measured in ken, where a ken is the interval between two pillars of a traditional-style building. In Japan , long ago Pagoda architecture served as inspiration for stone garden ornaments in Japan. The stone Pagodas, known as Sekitō (石塔) in Japanese, are a perfect addition to your traditional or your very own created Japanese garden because of the symbolism and their its unique presence. A stone Pagoda can add a one-of-a-kind essence to a Japanese garden like no other garden ornament could. This beautifully hand-carved sculpture would make an exceptional visual statement and substantial conversational choice for your special garden location. Only One. Lifetime guarantee of authenticity. • China Antique Qing Monumental Buddhist Stone Pagoda
    Located in South Burlington, VT
China antique monumental Pagoda Shrine with carved Lohans, 115" high, red sandstone, eight sections, Qing dynasty (1644-1911) This stone pagoda is a monumental work of art seldom seen in the west. Pagodas evolved from Indian stupas which were originally designed to hold the Buddha’s relics and textual paper sutras. This tiered tower composition became popular all over Asia and its architectural form differed from region to region. In China, its origins date to Buddhist missionaries who traveled the Silk Road. Early examples were built in temples but by the 13th century they were found outside the temple complex. Oldest examples had simple round or square bases and then later octagonal or more stylistic forms like the “censer” type of base on this pagoda. The 18 Arhats (lohans) portray Buddha’s messengers and each Lohan cylindrical tier is unique. This tour de force could serve as the centerpiece in the finest indoor space, or private or public Chinese or Asian inspired garden or Buddhist art collection. Photographs taken in natural light. Provenance: Private New England Collection acquired in 2005 in China from private collection Cheng Du, Sichuan Province. About Pagodas: Chinese pagoda towers...
