Life-Sized Burmese Dry Lacquer Buddha in Royal Attire, Early 20th Century
$19,500

About
An outstanding lifesize early 20th century Shan Burmese dry lacquer figure of the Buddha dressed in royal attire.
The royal Buddha sits upon a raised platform is vajrasana, hands in bhumiprasha mudra, calling the earth to witness his enlightenment.
He is dressed in attire reserved only for the highest ranks of the Burmese courts, featuring a heavily embellished and form fitting tunic that hugs his slender body, flowing down to an equally heavy skirt that covers the legs. Remnants of gilding are visible in the crevices of his clothing.
His face is youthful and calm. He stares out into the distance from almond shaped eyes, a sweet smile upon his lips. He has long, pendulous earlobes that touch his shoulders. His hair is arranged in dense rows of neat curls.
Created in the dry lacquer technique (man-hpaya), this Buddha is deceptively light, being hollow, and made from almost pure lacquer. The intricate details of the Buddha's clothing is also crafted from lacquer in the thayo technique. Due to their relatively fragile nature, as compared to wood or bronze, as well as the immense amount of time required to create dry lacquer figures, surviving large-scale dry lacquer works are exceedingly rare.
