Oak Church Railing - From Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris

About the Item

This magnificent oak church railing is a rare piece directly sourced from the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Designed in the late 19th century under the direction of the renowned architect Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, this furniture embodies the Gothic elegance and spirituality of the period. A survivor of the tragic 2019 fire, this railing is one of the few original items removed from the cathedral to allow for restoration work. Millions of worshippers and visitors have admired this emblematic piece, and it appears in countless photos and videos of Notre-Dame’s interior, making it an extraordinarily valuable historical artifact. We have carefully cleaned and waxed the piece while preserving the poignant scars left by the fire, which stand as a testament to the violence of the event. Every detail of this railing tells part of the unique history of one of the world’s most iconic monuments. Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Located in Dallas, TX
Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...
