About the Item

A simple original Georgian English side gate, circa 1780. At over 240 years old, this antique garden gate’s sturdy wrought iron construction has stood the test of time. Today, it will make a timeless feature of a traditional country garden or add old English character to more contemporary settings. Wrought Iron Garden Gates Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.
