Louis XIV Doors and Gates

LOUIS XIV STYLE

As opposed to the styles that would follow from the other 18th-century French kings, Louis XV and Louis XVI, antique Louis XIV furniture is rigid and imposing. It expresses opulence — even its armchairs, with their upright backs, straight legs and lavish ornamentation, look like thrones. Authentic Louis XIV sofas, a then newly emerging iteration of seating, are fully upholstered and often feature decoratively carved frames of walnut, chestnut or oak.

When French King Louis XIV established his royal court at Versailles in 1682, he transformed what was once a hunting lodge into a palace that declared his wealth and power through its design. Until his death in 1715, he reigned with a spirit of excess and absolute political dominance. The “Sun King,” as he called himself, believed that France revolved around him as planets do the sun. Louis XIV adopted the sun as his emblem, decorating the grounds with symbols of the sun and Apollo, the Greek god of the sun. As he stated, “There is nothing that indicates more clearly the magnificence of great princes than their superb palaces and their precious furniture.” He was a child when he became king in 1643, only shaping his style after he became absolute monarch in 1661.

Reflecting trends in French Baroque art, Louis XIV furniture characteristics included exuberant decoration. There were gilded bronze details including shells, suns, grotesques, lions and classical references like acanthus leaves. The years of growth in the country’s manufacturing, such as the tapestries and cabinets made at Gobelins, led to design innovations. The commode replaced the chest as a storage device, with drawers and a surface that could double as a desk.

The materials were luxurious, such as the popular tortoiseshell veneer technique that leading cabinetmaker Pierre Golle used in his designs. André-Charles Boulle, who became royal cabinetmaker in 1672, was a masterful artist of marquetry, using inlays of ebony, exotic woods and mother-of-pearl.

17th Century French Oak Entry Doors from a Hotel Particulier, Aix-En-Provence
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-crafted in the late 1600s in France, this stunning pair of entry doors once graced a hotel particulier in Aix-en-Provence, in the South of France. A hotel particulier is not a hotel in today’s sense of the word, but rather it is a large, private residence, typically with an interior courtyard. It is derived from the Old French word hostel and particulier, which means “private”. There are numerous examples in larger cities in France, such as Paris, Bordeaux, and Aix-en-Provence. The doors were crafted out of local French oak wood. Both doors have been carved with the same details and adorned with two tiers of iron nailheads, one at the very top, and one along the top of the bottom panel. These iron nails secure the long horizontal iron hinge straps on the backs of the doors The bottom portion of the doors consists of a large carved lozenge that consists of four smaller raised lozenges. The middle panel is comprised of a vertical rectangle with an arched top and thick layers of molding that form a fantastic architrave. A significantly thinner molding graces the uppermost panel, which also has been carved as a rectangle (horizontally orientated) with a sinuous bottom. Expertly restored for over 3 months by a talented French ebeniste, the doors combine French history with beautiful functionality (photos of pre-restoration available upon request). Large French entry doors...

Pair of 17th Century Forged Iron and Bronze Gates from the French Basque Country
Located in Dallas, TX
Dating back to the period of Louis XIV (mid- to late-1600’s), these scrolled forged iron gates with bronze dore embellishments were crafted in the French section of Basque Country. Le Pays Basque, as it is known in France, is a collection of regions inhabited by the Basque people, incorporating parts of Spain and France. This highly worked pair of gates, known as "portillons" , were a type of small and decorative barrier which can be found at the entrance to a house or a park. Another well known use for this type of low gate, was to provide a decorative surround for an altar. The iron gates seen here most likely came from the altar of a church in Navarre, which is mostly in Spain, but extends into the southwest portion of France (see altar photo example). Each side of the gate features a crest comprised of two C-scrolls banded by a geometric bronze protuberance. Identical bronze flourishes are also seen on the main body of the gate, with 11 bands...

Pair of circa 1800 French Wrought Iron Gates
Located in Dallas, TX
This fabulous 4 section wrought iron gate from France has beautiful scrolling motifs throughout, and it is in excellent overall condition. Some of the tole motifs have been modestly highlighted with gold lacquer. The rest of the iron gate has a worn polish, which gives it a wonderful finish. The gate is completely hand wrought, with all connections being pinned. We chose the angle for the gates in the photos below, but due to their hinges, they can be installed either completely flat, or at 90 degrees, or any angle in between. Their shape is high at the ends and middle, making them more interesting to the eye. Gates such as these can be used inside and out for various design applications. These can be used in the garden either as entrance gates, or as surrounds for a specific area. Inside, they can be used as fireplace gates...
