Beautiful 18th century French fireback with a Saint Andrew's cross and two pillars of Hercules. Saint Andrew is said to have been martyred on a cross in this shape. The cross is since then a sign for humility and sacrifice. The pillars of Hercules symbolize strength and the unknown. They stand for the club of Hercules.
