Massive Renaissance Period Betrothal Mantel from the Loire Valley
About the Item
This oversize Louis XIII limestone mantle tells the story of a Renaissance period betrothal from France's Loire Valley. Wreathed in fruited garlands and united by symbolic ribbon, betrothal portraits of a young man and his intended bride are carved into the lintel face. The youth and wealth of the couple are evident in the portraits' detailed carving, as is evidence of aristocratic country life. Two levrier hunting dogs lie in prominent response beneath the couples' portraits. Not only are these dogs symbols of wealth, grace and vitality, but charmingly of fecundity and leisurely family life as well. Nestled into the courbels that top the deeply channeled legs are carved a pair of sleeping puppies, bidding the young couple to bring their own offspring to the family hearth.
