About the Item

A reclaimed rare black Chinoiserie painted fireplace with unique style and form. A fire surround as striking as this would suit both modern and traditional interiors alike. The frieze and jambs are adorned with detailed painted oriental scenes, including buildings, musical figures and birds. Chinoiserie, from the French ‘Chinois’ meaning Chinese, was a style inspired by art and design from China, Japan, and other Asian countries in the 18th century. It largely relied on craftsmanship and style rather than accurate portrayals of oriental motifs. Chinoiseries height in Britain dated from 1750 to 1765.
