About the Item

Orcio pots have been used for centuries to store perishables, originating in ancient Italy as terra cotta olive jars. Notice the rotund body and narrower neck that is true to the original orcio form. The smaller openings minimized exposure to the air, helping to preserve the contents of the pots. This pair of cast stone orcio pots from Southern Italy is quite heavy, allowing them to be used as tree planters (interior openings are 14 ½ inches in diameter). The coloration of our orcio pots is roughly stone gray, but there are accents of ochre, white, and lighter gray, making them attractive options for garden ornaments as well.

Pair of Large French Cast Garden Vases after the Models of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
By Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
Located in Dallas, TX
After the original 18th century garden vases, entitled Autumn, by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, this pair of large cast garden vases are in the classic krater form. A sprawling scene with mascarons, rams’ heads, and grapevines are set between egg and dart molding and gadrooned lobes. Made with a mixture of crushed stone and cement (known as reconstituted stone), the tall vases were imbued with a cream coloring agent during the casting process. Each vase is supported by a thick rectangular plinth beneath a tapering neck adorned with geometric motifs and Vitruvian waves filled with flowers. These impressive garden vases will make a wonderful statement, inside or outdoors. Originally part of a set of four vases depicting the seasons of Autumn and Spring, which were designed for the Chateau de Choisy by Ange-Jacques...
