About the Item

Made to order Florida keystone star planter with base. Measures: 12” diameter 8x8” base. Inspired by Coral Castle, an oolite limestone structure created by the Latvian-American eccentric Edward Leedskalnin in the 1920’s during a time where there was no equipment to move or carve the large pieces. Coral Castle is noted for legends surrounding its creation that claim it was built single-handedly by Leedskalnin using reverse magnetism or supernatural abilities to move and carve numerous stones, each weighing many tons. Creating sculptural planters from this came to me as a 3am thought. If Edward did it in the 1900s, how hard can it be today? Apparently very challenging. I chose to go with Keystone, which is the bedrock found only in the Florida Keys. You can no longer excavate keystone unless a building is approved to break ground. The second challenge was finding the fabricator who has the right CNC machine to cut spheres. Once again, the plants guided me. A nursery run would give me the lead where I could bring my vision to life. Tears included.

Bhaca Medium Sandstone Planter by Indigenus

Bhaca Medium Sandstone Planter by Indigenus Designed by Andile Dyalvane Dimensions: Ø 77,9 x H 95,3 cm. Materials: Stone. Weight: 80 kg. Different colors and sizes are available. Please contact us. The Bhaca is a completely personal and original range of stone planters that reflect ceramicist Andile Dyalvane’s connection to his Xhosa roots while celebrating his mastery of an elemental material of choice – clay. Bhaca - meaning scarification - is a traditional Xhosa method of finely cutting the skin (usually on the cheeks) to mark initiation, clan identification, or healing. Andile desires to preserve and share his cultural roots of this ancient tradition by cutting into clay and pushing open the cuts where they intersect as if to open the flesh. The Bhaca has been electronically scanned and scaled from smaller clay vessels...
