Stone troughs, such as this carved rectangular one from France, have been used in rural Europe for centuries, making it quite difficult to determine the carving date. Cast iron models began to replace the hand-carved stone versions in the mid-19th century, placing the creation of this trough at circa 1850. The dark gray stone has developed a beige and brown patina in some areas, as well as numerous cavitations from exposure to the elements.
