Monumental French Cast Sculpture of L'Amour, after Louis Auguste Moreau, H-88.75

About the Item

A more monumental version of the original late-19th-century sculpture entitled L’Amour by Louis Auguste Moreau, this figural grouping stands over seven feet tall (88 ¾ inches). Our version was cast in metal in France during the 1900s and has developed a lovely, weathered patina with some areas of verdigris as a result of exposure to the elements. The larger-than-life size of the sculpture is quite amazing; however, it is the fantastic depth and perspective that catches the viewer’s attention. Notice how the putto near the woman’s left hip appears to be flying, as he hovers with a pointed instrument in his right hand and a sash wrapped around his waist. On the other side of the woman is a second, winged cherub, reaching up to offer a woven basket full of rose petals. The details of the sculpture are quite exceptional, allowing folds of fabric in the woman’s long dress to be seen, along with her pinned-up hair, and the feathered wings of the cupids. An irregular dome-like base provides stability for this fantastic cast sculpture that can be displayed in a garden, courtyard, or indoors. Louis Auguste Moreau was a French sculptor born in 1855 in Dijon. Moreau came from a family of artists, including his father, Auguste, who was well-known in his own right. The younger Moreau earned recognition for his cast bronze figurines and his masterful ability to depict allegorical themes using women, children, and putti as subjects. The large statue seen here, cast after the Moreau creation was originally designed to be the focal point of an interior “jardin d’hiver” or exterior French garden.

Repaired: Possible old restoration work to the base and to a foot of the "flying" cherub. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. Strong condition with some age splits (see photos). Possible small restoration work to the flying cherub’s foot and the base. Estimated weight is around 250-300 lbs.
