Mid-19th Century French Copper Repousse Chateau Grape Gathering Basket
About the Item
Originally used for wine ceremonies at a chateau vineyard in Burgundy, France, this very large mid-nineteenth century hand hammered copper repousse grape gathering basket stands at an impressive 34.5 inches in height. It features two coats of arms in the center, one with sheaves of wheat and the other with a rose. Above the coats of arms is a crown and below is a dragon. Surrounding the central motifs are scrolling leaves and diamond patterns. The repousse dragon is repeated at the top on the back of the basket. This piece would be ideal to present a grand flower arrangement or to hold fireplace tools, canes, or umbrellas, circa 1850.
