About the Item

Brilliantly glazed in tones of jade, deep turquoise and gold, this Persian-influenced Art Deco bowl was made by André Metthey, the innovative artist and ceramicist who operated out of his own studio on the outskirts of Paris in the early 20th century. After working in the Art Nouveau manner earlier in his career, and creating pieces with designs by Fauvists such as Redon, Rouault, Matisse, Bonnard, Vlaminck, and Derain, Metthey went on to create exotic pieces influenced by ancient glazes and patterns from the Near East. This piece is especially vivid, and was auctioned at Sotheby's years ago. The bottom shows Metthey's monogram and mark.
