"Bullfighter and Bull, " Brilliant Art Deco Glazed Bowl by Diederich

About the Item

A colorful and brilliant example of William Hunt Diederich's art - featuring highly-stylized, attenuated figures - this glazed, footed bowl features a yellow-jacketed matador engaging with a handsome, lean bull, the bull's horns piercing the matador's cape. The colors - deep browns, canary yellow and a rich, blue-green teal - are luminous, and the textures of the clay and glazes are clearly a nod to ancient pottery from Greece and Tuscany. Famous for his attenuated, highly stylized horses, hounds and other animals, often executed in iron or ceramic, William Hunt Diederich was one of the masters of Art Deco imagery. The bowl is signed on the reverse.
