Provincial Chinese Trunk Mortar, c. 1900

About the Item

This large wooden mortar dates to the late 19th century and was originally used for crushing rice, grain, spices and other foodstuffs. Carved from a single tree trunk, the mortar has a smoothly worn interior bowl from years of use. The exterior is smooth to the touch with a burnished patina, enlivened by a beautiful, swirling grain pattern and antique blade marks. Today, the large rice mortar brings organic texture and form to modern interiors as an unexpected catch-all or a cachepot for houseplants.
