Antique Japanese Seto Satsuma Charger Japan Figure Relief Edo or Meiji

About the Item

This Fabulous Japanese Satsuma Style Earthenware Charger. With a central scene of what we think is an Arhat. He is carrying a fan in his hand and behin his head a halo is visible. Check the facial expression on the mans face Large part of the piece is in relief. It is a Seto plate 'Ishi-zara' (a stone plate) in late Edo to Meiji and it think it is the one but somebody decorated it like Satsuma style. In Buddhism, an arhat (Sanskrit) or arahant (Pali) is one who has gained insight into the true nature of existence and has achieved nirvana. Mahayana Buddhist traditions have used the term for people far advanced along the path of Enlightenment, but who may not have reached full Buddhahood.
