"Apollo and His Chariot in the Sky", Art Deco Bronze Dish/Bowl by Le Verrier

About the Item

Almost Baroque in the energy and movement of the scene it depicts, this Art Deco footed dish by Max Le Verrier depicts a wild scene -- Apollo in his chariot led by several rearing horses, framed by dark clouds with rays of sunlight breaking through. One of Apollo's retainers is offering one of the horses a drink -- a large shell brimming with water. The bronze is given several rich patinas -- the figures have a golden finish, the clouds are black, and the ground is a lovely verdigris color. Le Verrier opened his own studio in 1919 and won a medal at the famed 1925 Exposition in Paris that gave "Art Deco" its name. Later, he established a foundry that cast bronze sculptures for Pierre Le Faguays and Marcel Bourain, among others. Although Le Verrier experimented with other alloys, he continued to create pieces in bronze as well.
