Art Nouveau Flower Shaped Jewel Trays Hugo Leven, Kayser & Sohn

About the Item

This set of 4 beautiful Art Nouveau flower shaped plates designed by Hugo Leven for J.P. Kayser & Sohn in Germany in 1897. The plates are made of ‘Kayserzinn’, a special lead-free alloy of tin and silver distinguished by its lasting gleam. The trays are formed by a big, open flower with bees and a smaller insect. The flowing, soft outlines of the petals of the flower and the well thought-out sparsely applied additional decoration, here the insects, are typical for Hugo Levens work. The decor was inspired by both floral French Art Nouveau and by linear German Jugendstil. It was the Kayser company’s aim, through its use of the methods of mass production, to make artistically designed, contemporary Jugenstil objects of daily use. Their main designer and artistic director was Hugo Leven (1874-1956). All Kayserzinn objects in pewter are numbered from the number “4000” onwards and marked with the word “Kayserzinn”. The model number “4000” was introduced in 1894-5 and the last, number “4999” was produced in 1925. These dishes are numbered 4199 and so produced in 1897. They are beautiful and in very good condition.
