Chinese Canton Enamel Quatrefoil Tray, Republic Period, circa 1920, China

About the Item

A lovely large Chinese Canton enamel quatrefoil tray, Republic Period, circa 1920, China. The copper tray of lobed quatrefoil form, and decorated in Canton enamels of turquoise, pink, white, blue, green and black. A large central quatrefoil reserve has been delicately painted with a shanshui (mountain and water) landscape scene. Mountains loom in the background over a forrest and large body of water. In the foreground, and single figure walks across a bridge towards a mountain retreat partially obscured by trees. A border of light turquoise enamel painted with scrolling flowers, peaches, pomegranates, and butterflies surrounds the central reserve. Peaches are a symbol of longevity, while pomegranates represent wishes for many children. Butterflies are symbols of a happy marriage. Looking at all the symbolism, this tray was most likely a wedding gift, wishing the new couple a happy marriage and long life full blessed with many children. The short sides of the dish are enameled a wonderful shade of pink with a simple scrolling design. The back with a short foot and simply enameled in a robins egg blue.

An elegant pair of Japanese cast and lacquered bronze pagoda lanterns, Taisho Period, circa 1920, Japan. The lanterns a true pair, with mirrored decorations and lantern doors opening in opposite directions. The lanterns of traditional toro form, cast in bronze, and lacquered. Each lantern comprised of three parts - the "roof", the "fire box", and the pedestal. This type of pedestal lantern is called a dai-doro, as opposed to the hanging lantern type, tsuri-doro. The hexagonal roof of the lantern, reminiscent of temples or pagodas, features a wonderful, dense cloud pattern with three heart-shaped cutouts, known as inome, or boar's eye. The roof topped by a hoju, the Buddhist flaming Jewel of Wisdom. Each of the six corners feature a fantastic shachihoko, mythical beasts with the face of a tiger and body of a fish. Bells are suspended from the shachihoko. The globular body of the lantern features four pierced panels with the three leaf hollyhock mon of the Tokugawa clan surrounded by a karakusa pattern of scrolling vines. This small and exquisite Chinese Canton Qianlong period enamel square dish features cut corners and is beautifully decorated with a five-clawed pink dragon surrounded by 18 blue ruyi clouds against a vibrant yellow background. The design is accented by two branches of peaches (or similar fruit) and two branches of peach blossoms (or other fruit blossoms), all framed by an intricate seaweed pattern border. In Chinese symbolism, five-clawed dragons are reserved exclusively for emperors, as the number five is considered sacred, representing the five elements. In contrast, four-clawed dragons are associated with kings, princes, and high-ranking officials, while three-clawed dragons are designated for the merchant class. This piece is crafted from enamel on brass, dating back to the Qianlong period (1736–1795), and is characterized by its hexagonal form and the distinctive Famille Rose palette, often referred to as "Canton enamel." Chinese painted enamel, commonly known as Canton enamel, derives its name from its principal manufacturing location, Canton.
