19th Century American Rosewood Box With Fruit Wood Star Inlay, Fun Interior
About the Item
A beautifully made hand carved rosewood and fruit wood box with heart shaped bone escutcheon.The whimsical interior lined with paper carpet pattern from Peterson's Magazine 1876. The sides with reverse painted blue glass panels with floral motifs. The top with star inlay. This lovely box is quite architectural in form with three set back tiers on top and an undulating fruit wood molding on the base. Likely made as a Valentine gift with the inside personalized by the receiver. A wonderful piece of folk art possibly made by a sailor on a whaling boat.
