About the Item

An extraordinary porcupine quill decorated ebonized wood spice box from the mid-19th century. Rarely are examples as complete as this incredible specimen. The rectangular hinged lid box having wooden strapping, bands of striated quills between bone inlaid ebony stiles, and inlaid bone accents. Oening the hinged lid reveals an interior fitted with a divided tray, embellished with exotic inlays and nine individually lidded compartments, resting above a single large storage compartment. The interior finished in luxurious deep blue felt. With ten various size compartments its perfect for storing and organizing all sorts of small items. With its beautifully contrasting colors and luxurious exotic materials, clean lines and elegant form, this 19th century Anglo-Indian spice box from India will be a truly unique and interesting decorative accent in any home, whether placed atop a desk, chest-of-drawers or coffee table, it's sure to receive plenty of compliments as well as spark conversation! Small cabinets such as this were designed for and popular amongst European merchants, traders and officials living and traveling in Asia. The small portable chest of drawers / various compartments could function as a spice storage case, table or desk box, used for storing and transporting the personal valuables, such as a money safe, jewelry, and writing instruments, as well as other important items and documents, in addition to a variety of different specialized uses. Dimensions (approx): 5"H, 12"W, 8.25"D, 5.5lbs When Europeans first arrived in Asia the absence of chairs and chair-height furniture such as tables meant that they found the vast majority of native furniture unsuitable for use. Instead, they commissioned their own pieces from local craftsmen, leading to the development of unique Eurasian styles. The present cabinet is an exceptional example of this style, combining the European elements with Indian craftsmanship of the highest calibre. The resulting effect is of exotic opulence, combining both Western and Eastern traditions. Mughals popularized furniture in India but the concept of conventional furniture was promoted through the influence of the Portuguese and the English East India Company after they began trading in the Indian Ocean, setting up their trading posts (factories), fortresses and settlements throughout the coastal areas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and around Asian shores from 16th century onwards. The Dutch & French were also influential in bringing about a revolution in cabinet making in the years to follow. As a result, a number of European styles combined with Indian motifs & designs came into being leading to the birth of fusion styles such as Anglo Indian, Indo Portuguese, Indonesian Dutch, Anglo Burmese and so on. --
