19th Century Italian Marquetry Box

About the Item

An early 19th century miniature Italian coffer, or hinged box, made of solid walnut with marquetry inlay of various woods and bookmatched bird's-eye maple veneer. The design on the top of the box indicates this was likely a wedding gift: the couple's initials are intertwined on a shield with bow and arrows and two hearts. The interior is lined in paper and has four wood strips that slide up to release four small hidden drawers, one on either side and one at the back. Exceptional craftsmanship. French polish finish. Lock is missing and there is no key. Weight: 9.5 lbs.
