About the Item
Inlaid with floral sprays of engraved mother of pearl and brass
From our Sewing Box collection, we are delighted to offer this William IV Rosewood Inlaid Sewing Box. The Sewing Box of rectangular form veneered in Rosewood and delicately inlaid to the exterior with brass staining and mother of pearl and brass floral sprays to the front and lid. The interior of the Sewing Box is complete with a fully fitted removable accessory tray with solid silver engine turned reels, two thimbles, sewing tools and mother of pearl winders. The inner lid of the interior drops down to store sewing patterns and other associated documents and the top accessory tray can be removed via the two tabs to the edge to access further storage below. The Rosewood Inlaid Sewing Box dates to the latter Georgian period during the turn of the George IV and William IV period circa 1830.
Rosewood has many variations. Indian Rosewood, also known as Bombay Rosewood or Bombay Blackwood, is found in India and Indonesia. It is highly valued for its striking appearance with colours ranging from a medium-brown to dark red-brown with even darker grain lines. Madagascan Rosewood, found in Madagascar is a pink-brown colour with a darker almost purple grain.
Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is the same material that natural pearls are made from and is desirable due to its strong and resilient makeup along with its beautiful iridescent shimmer.
Georgian, a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV.
