Chinoiserie Large Porcelain Dresser Box with Lid In Style of Ginori, Italy
About the Item
Large rectangular dresser or trinket box with lid features Chinoiserie decor with faux bamboo construction elements and dragonfly motifs on the sides and the lid. The handle is sculpted in shape of a large knot of faux bamboo, reminiscent of Chippendale style pieces. The combination of highly detailed faux bamboo, meticulously hand painted in various shades of green, and monochromatic white background creates a reserved, but realistically textured canvas for the life-like dragonflies, that are depicted sitting on or flying around the bamboo elements. The dragonfly motifs are different, not single one is repeated.
The vintage porcelain or majolica ceramic box is signed and stamped on the bottom. The signature consists of model number and "Made Italy" in handwriting, and the stamp appears to be crown shaped with some wording underneath; unfortunately, the stamp did not print well and is partially concealed by the glaze, making it hard to read. The crown mark on the stamp and the exquisite quality of the craftsmanship led us to think of Ginori, who are known for using multiple crown marks throughout their history, but it is hard to positively attribute the box based on partially readable mark alone. We were unable to find other examples of the box to compare the mark and signatures, as it appears to be quite rare.
Sculptural, decorative box with elegant form, high quality painting, and statement piece presence will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Collected, or Contemporary.

Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
