About the Item

Egyptian Inlaid Casket of Exotic & Olive Wood, Shell, & Tagua Nut Depicting Scenes of Ramses II and the Afterlife, Cairo, circa 1930s An exceptional Egyptian revival inlaid olivewood box, measuring 11" wide × 7" deep × 4" high, finely decorated with inlaid iridescent shell and Tagua Nut (vegetable ivory) inlays. The box reproduces scenes from the celebrated reliefs at Abu Simbel, commissioned by Pharaoh Ramses II (XIX Dynasty, 13th century B.C.) to commemorate his victories and divine patronage. The lid shows Ramses II in ceremonial regalia, presented by the youthful Horus to the enthroned goddesses Sekhmet and Maat. Hieroglyphs and sacred symbols of life (ankhs), power (was scepters), and rebirth surround the composition. The front frieze depicts the famous “Weighing of the Heart” from the Book of the Dead: Anubis balances the heart against the feather of Truth while Thoth records the judgment, with Osiris seated to receive the justified soul. The reverse celebrates Ramses in his chariot at the Battle of Kadesh, triumphing over the Hittites. The side panels show celestial deities and underworld scenes guiding the deceased toward eternity. The craftsmanship is superb, with olivewood chosen for its fine grain and sacred associations, while iridescent shell evokes eternal light. The use of vegetable ivory underscores the artisan’s attention to authentic luxury materials. Likely made in Cairo during the 1920s–30s, when Egyptomania flourished in tandem with the rediscovery of Pharaonic monuments, this box combines historicist scholarship with exquisite decorative technique. A rare and meaningful example of Egyptian revival craft, equally suited to collectors of Egyptology, fine decorative boxes, or inlaid furniture.
