About the Item

An elegant Korean black lacquer and mother of pearl inlay stationery box with lion and peony, circa 1930's, Korea. The rectangular box and cover supported on a raised platform with shaped aprons all around. The cover of the box faceted design, with beveled edges, and in laid with iridescent mother of pearl. The top of the cover decorated with a large Buddhistic lion and a single large peony blossom with scrolling foliage. The lion is portrayed in a stalking position, its muscular body outlined in mother of pearl, while its head, mane, and bushy tail in solid mother of pearl with etched details. The beveled edge of the cover with an inlaid mother of pearl geometric key fret border design, known as leiwen, or rolling thunder, in Chinese. Delightful squirrels of mother of pearl scamper along the sides of the lid. The aprons of the base with further mother of pearl inlay in a design of scrolling flowers and vines. The interior and underside of the box of plain black lacquer.
