A charming scarce Spanish Colonial era parquetry inlaid cedar legged storage chest (large table box / small trunk) with nicely aged warm rich dark patina. circa 1790 Rustic handmade craftsmanship, most likely North America, 18th / early 19th century, crafted of richly figured solid cedar with attractive grain patterns and dark rich patina, rectangular case with hinged lid, lifting to reveal open interior, the exterior with contrasting diamond-form parquetry inlay and later decorative iron hardware, rising on hand turned front legs and chamfered rear legs. Perfectly imperfect, it's easy to find beauty in the flaws and age related imperfections, with distressed patina, restorations and later elements, nothing that detracts from the display or functionality, but only adds to the sophisticated antique character and wabi-sabi charm, elegant rustic warmth, and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over very long periods of time! Attractive appearance, with nicely aged warm rich dark distressed patina over the whole. Structurally sound, sturdy, stable. Wear consistent with age, use, handling and exposure, including nicks, scuffs, scratches, minor losses, old restorations, fill, and typical antique character marks throughout. Replacement hardware iron handle for decoration and does not latch or lock. Lightly cleaned, ready for use!
