Antique 18th Century Sterling Silver Toothpick Case Birmingham Samuel Pemberton

About the Item

An exceptional & early antique Georgian 18th century engraved sterling silver toothpick holder case, Birmingham, Samuel Pemberton, 1790. This very fine antique silver case is of narrow rectangular form with cut corners, the hinged cover with prick & dot decoration & beautiful sun rays with a central floral cartouche to the center, at each end are corresponding floral panels. The sides of the case are engraved with oval chain-work and floral panels, at each end of the case is an oval 'saw tooth' vacant cartouche (free from an engraved monogram), The base of the case is engraved with sun rays and a central floral panel, there are a full set of crisp hallmarks with Samuel Pemberton's mark, duty & sterling mark and the anchor for Birmingham and the date letter for 1790. The case and engraving is in excellent, original, condition & the interior has its original mirror and velvet lining. Samuel Pemberton made very fine toothpick cases and a similar example is shown in "Silver Boxes" by Eric Delieb, page 86, Plate 126, there is also a very similar box housed in the Birmingham assay office collection. This is a fine and early example a case by Samuel Pemberton. Silver weight 35 grams
