About the Item

A fine and rare 19th century sterling silver snuff box made specifically for the Great Exhibition of 1851, held at the Crystal Palace in London. The lid shows a finely detailed engraved image of the Crystal Palace surrounded by a border of hand chased foliate motifs, opening on precisely made barrel hinges to reveal a gilded interior bearing Birmingham hallmarks, date mark for 1850 and makers marks for Foxall & Company. The reverse decorated with hand chased foliate motifs and centered by a blank cartouche against engine turned geometric designs. Weight, 39 grams. In addition to its scarcity as well as it historical & cultural significance, it is worth mentioning that the silversmithing firm of Foxall & Company manufactured wares for a very brief period of time, from 1850-1853. This truly rare example would be cherished by any serious collector of silver, particularly a collector of silver boxes.
