About the Item

A French snuff box from the Edwardian Period. Very beautiful hexagonal box, created in Paris France during the Edwardian period, back in the 1905. This handsome snuff (pills) box has been crafted in solid silver and decorated with neoclassical patterns in the manner of Louis XVI. It is entirely embellished with applications of purplish-royal blue and gray-white enamels over guilloche surfaces and with the interiors finished with gilding. Fitted with an invisible hinge and a lid that is properly closing. Weight: 93.4 Grams, (59.87 Dwt). Measurements: 67 mm by 60 mm by 15 mm (2.63 x 2.36 x 0.59 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks; the helmeted head of Minerva for the warranty and assay of the silver and two times with the maker's maitre mark JQ inside a lozange cartouche. Edwardian Jewelry Period was during the King Edward VII, after whom this period of jewelry history is named, reigned over England for only nine years, yet the style of jewelry known as “Edwardian” was created roughly between 1890 and 1920. Edwardian-era rings tend to be larger, opulent pieces, and stacked ring designs were popular. The metal surfaces of the rings were often diamond-encrusted for additional shimmer. Each of these rings is a work of art, showcasing a bygone era of grace, elegance and the royalty the Edwardian era is named for. Note: Guilloché is used in fine jewelry to enhance the appearance of brooches, rings and pendants. Guilloché enamel refers to metal pieces that have been given the Guilloché treatment and then covered with a translucent layer of enamel, giving the geometric patterns underneath the enamel a colorful hue. Note: Snuff boxes were used for containing snuff, a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils, and were very popular in the 18th century when snuff-taking was fashionable. Highly decorated and valuable objects, they became collectors' items in the 19th century. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry pouch. Condition: The overall condition of this box is very good. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the silver. The enamel is secured in the settings with very minor loss.
