Tobacco Jar, by Keith Murray for Wedgwood, circa 1930

About the Item

One of Murray's particularly successful designs, the Tobacco Jar stands as a testament to the singular beauty of line and form, with no need for additional decoration. This example is in Bronze Basalt, an unsual form of pottery, which was made by Wedgwood from time to time. During this period, it is thought that it was used only for special orders, which would explain the low number of examples seen. Keith Murray, a renowned figure in the Art Deco movement, made significant contributions to design during the early to mid-20th century. Born in New Zealand in 1892, Murray moved to England to study architecture at the Architectural Association School in London. His background in architecture heavily influenced his design philosophy, which emphasized clean lines, geometric forms, and functional beauty. Murray initially worked as an architect, but his career took a pivotal turn when he began designing ceramics and glassware for renowned British companies. His work for Wedgwood, one of the most prestigious ceramics manufacturers, brought him widespread acclaim. Murray's designs for Wedgwood are characterized by their simplicity and elegance. He favored monochromatic glazes and unadorned forms, allowing the shape and material of each piece to take center stage. His ceramics often featured subtle, incised lines and geometric patterns, reflecting the modernist influences of the Art Deco movement. In addition to ceramics, Murray designed glassware for Stevens & Williams, a leading glass manufacturer. His glass designs echoed the same principles of simplicity and refinement seen in his ceramics. Using clear and colored glass, Murray created vases, bowls, and other decorative items that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Murray’s design ethos extended beyond individual pieces to encompass entire collections, which were often showcased in prominent exhibitions. His work was featured in the British Pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition in 1937, where he received significant recognition for his contributions to modern design. Keith Murray’s influence on Art Deco design is evident in his ability to blend modernist principles with a timeless elegance. His work has left a lasting legacy, influencing subsequent generations of designers. Today, his pieces are highly prized by collectors and can be found in major museums and private collections around the world. Murray’s dedication to simplicity, functionality, and beauty remains a hallmark of his enduring impact on the world of design.

Trophy Plate, Wedgwood, circa 1900
By Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
Trophy plates were a particularly Victorian development at Wedgwood, taking the use of classical ornament to its absolute limit. Over 2,000 individual sprigs were made, applied, and undercut to produce this plate. Only the best decorators made these, beginning with Thomas Lovatt in the late 19th century - this is an example of his work. The central relief depicts Bellerophon with Pegasus. Bellerophon was a noble hero of Corinth, known for his strength and bravery. He was the son of Glaucus and the grandson of Sisyphus, though some myths suggest he was actually the son of Poseidon. Bellerophon was a skilled warrior and sought to accomplish great deeds. Pegasus was a magnificent, winged horse born from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa...
