Pair of Palace Size First Empire Figural Bronze Candelabra Signed Rabiat, 1805
Located in New York, NY
An exceptional pair of palace size gilt and patinated bronze Rouge Griotte marble candelabra by Claude-Francois Rabiat, circa 1805. Each with a classically draped figure of Winged Victory, the Goddess Nike, holding foliate form candelabra with flame and butterfly wing motif, standing upon a stepped bronze mounted Rouge Griotte marble base.
Condition: Original patina and gilding with consistent wear commensurate with age, the bronze elements in excellent condition. A very small abraision to the marble base and a minute area of professional, nearly undetectable restoration to corner of marble base. These candelabra were fitted for electricity at one point and can easily be electrified if desired.
The underside of each of the bases signed Rabiat.

Pair of Tall Empire silver plate Candelabras by JG Galle - early 19th century
By Gérard-Jean Galle
Located in GRENOBLE, FR
Rare pair of silver plate bronze candelabras, early 19th century production (Empire period).
Beautiful Louis XVI style model, elegant proportions, 2 to 3 lights each (you can turn the center piece over to get a third light).
They are composed of 17 independent parts each (the more there are, the higher the quality).
The bottom part looks exactly like an ormolu pair of candlesticks exhibited at chateau de Fontainebleau, listed in a book dedicated to bronze items that came into the castle under Emperor Napoleon's reign (last picture, the left candlestick). This books testifies that the ormolu pair has probably been delivered there by Claude Galle in 1807.
Our pair is a variant of this pair of candlesticks :
- silver plate instead of gilt bronze
- the candelabra part on top
Early 19th century work attributed to Gerard Jean Galle...

A fine pair of tall ormolu (mercury gilt bronze) and patinated bronze candelabras, French Restauration production, early 19th century work circa 1815 - 1820.
Spectacular 4-lights model held by winged putti standing on a finely chiseled column-shaped base. This pattern is a variant of the candelabras Claude Galle delivered to the Grand Trianon in 1809. This theme used to be very successful in early 19th century and were the subject of a number of imperial orders to Claude Galle, Thomire and Ravrio. Our candelabras were manufactured circa 1815 - 1820 : we attribute them to Gerard Jean Galle...

Pair of Empire Bronze Three Branched Candelabras
By Percier & Fontaine
Located in Paris, FR
Impressive pair of gilt and sculpted bronze candelabras with three branches. The stem of each candelabrum is a patinated bronze form of the winged goddess, Victory, who holds a gilt bronze torch in each of her hands. Her head is topped with a gilt bronze vase that transforms into the candelabra branches, which is embellished with griffins and rosettes. At the top of each candelabrum is a peacock standing on a globe, symbolizing the sun and immortality. Victory is standing on a cruciform-shaped base, which has a winged cupid on two sides and a caduceus on the other two sides. The intertwined snakes of the caduceus are a symbol of the Greek god Hermes (or the Roman god Mercury) and is a symbol of peace, eloquence and negotiation. Empire period. Perfect condition.
Our model is inspired by the projects of Charles Percier and Franc¸ois-Leonard Fontaine, famous architects of the Emperor. Their most important work, entitled Recueil de decorations inte´rieurs (Collection of interior decorations), was published in France at the, end of the 19th century. The winged Victories, caduceus and griffins are some of the motifs present in this piece that demonstrate the adoption of Percier and Fontaine’s decorative...

Pair of Empire Six-Light Candelabra Attributed to Escalier De Cristal circa 1819
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A remarkable and highly important pair of Empire gilt-bronze and cut-crystal six-light candelabra attributed to Escalier De Cristal De Paris.
French, circa 1819.
This exceptional pair of candelabra can almost certainly be attributed to the workshops of l'Escalier de Cristal de Paris. They relate in particular to a dressing table and chair, now in the collection of the Louvre, which formed part of a toilette suite that was exhibited by L'Escalier de Cristal at the 1819 Paris exhibition of the Produits de l'industrie. The present candelabra may very likely have been made as part of this suite.

Exceptional Pair of French Late Empire Gilt-bronze Candelabra Attributed to Pier
Located in Benington, Herts
A pair of exceptionally elegant and important late Empire five-light figural candelabra ‘A la Victoire’ in gilt-bronze, attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire, after a design by Charles Percier. Imposing size at 81cm in height.
French Paris c.1820
Superbly cast, in the Neo-Classical style, the five scrolling foliate candle branches enclosing central sconces issuing from a circular wreath supported by the winged figure of Victory (Nike), wearing diaphanous robes gathered by a sash above a long underskirt splaying out from above her ankles, with beautifully feathered wings flowing behind her as she looks straight ahead. Each figure standing on one foot, the other bent, resting on a plain sphere over a reeded palmette-cast baluster pedestal raised on square plinth. Wonderful colour and patina, pierced for electricity, old inventory label to the underside.

Pair of American Rococo Revival Patinated Bronze Candelabras, Ca. 1825
Located in New York, NY
Bronze, dark-brown patina, unmarked.
Measures: Height: 23”
Width: 14”
The notion of an “American Rococo” seems a contradiction in terms. The very word rococo is as French as Camembert. It connotes a style that reigned along with Louis XV in the aristocratic decadence of the 18th Century. It was garlanded, nonchalant, associated with erotic marshmallow nudes by Francois Boucher and foppish courtiers costumed as shepherds pretending they understood Jean-Jacques Rousseau when all they really wanted was romantic dalliance in the formal gardens of Versailles. In the history of painting it produced but one great artist, Antoine Watteau.
By contrast, Americans of the period are remembered as the flinty inheritors of New England Puritans, full of rectitude and having not a moment for furbelow or frippery. Such few painters as were around included hard-nosed realists like John Singleton Copley and Charles Willson Peale.
Well, as it turns out, life once again acts according to the principle of paradox. There was an American rococo. It came to us indirectly via England disguised under the name Chippendale. Now for the first time the style receives comprehensive survey in the exhibition “American Rococo, 1750-1775: Elegance in Ornament.” Jointly organized by New York’s Metropolitan Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, it opens here Sundaywith a spread of some 170 works of decorative art and a conscientious catalogue with essays by Met and LACMA curators Morrison H. Heckscher and Leslie Greene Bowman.
There are at least two ways of looking at the decorative arts. Connoisseurs appreciate their design and craftsmanship. Those of sociological bent examine objects of material culture for their revelations of history and the temper of the times. Actually neither view is complete without the other.
Stylistically the rococo reveals a longing for intimacy in its small scale and an urge to organic nature in its love of stylized vines, tendrils, tiny flowers and seashells. If it were a new manner being promoted by Madison Avenue today it would probably be called “Baroque Lite.” There is an ease about the style that makes it airy, but it has an underlying formality that bespeaks lives of gentrified cultivation rather than beer-bellied sloth. It’s fascinating to examine the flintlock firearms on view and find these weapons of death shaped and decorated with the most exquisite care by wood carvers and metal engravers.
All of this is completely consistent with the main currents of 18th-Century European thought. In France, Rousseau sang the virtues of nature and the noble savage like a present-day ecologist. In England, John Locke...
