Pair of Italian Altar Candelabra in Carved Wood, Lacquered and Gilded
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects
Particular, rare and antique pair of altar candelabra; they are made of carved wood, painted with white lacquer and finished with original gold leaf gilding; the solid and well defined shaped base, with curly feet, supports a proportioned and slender stem; the gilding is not invasive but aesthetically very elegant and harmonious; their height allows them to be used also from the floor. They have been electrified by placing faux candles on the top end, can be used with decorative bulbs, or you can have a custom lampshade built to your liking. The balanced and harmonious overall appearance, from the top to the bottom of each candelabra, shows the wonderful attention to detail of the Italian craftsmanship of that era. The torch-shaped candelabra is a liturgical decoration present in every church, once it was placed on the ground and only later on the altar; its use dates back to the very origins of the Church and is clearly and indissolubly linked to the symbolism of Light as an expression of Faith, Hope and the Resurrection of Christ. Beyond the environment in which it was placed, the candlestick has always had an important role in people's lives as it represented the protective element from darkness and gloom. Curiosity about these candlesticks: the fact that the objects have a well-finished front and a back without decoration make us understand that the church of destination was poor or country and could not afford luxury furnishings, so the candlesticks were commissioned to a small carpenter carver with the imposition that they had to be cheap but flashy; the skillful and intelligent craftsman perfectly executed the two wooden pieces then tried to save on the painting (it was in gold leaf!) then painted and decorated only the front part of the candelabra, the one facing the faithful leaving incomplete the back one that would remain hidden to the crowd! Surely, destined for daily use, they were placed on the high altar or in a wall chapel...
