About the Item

Large handmade solid silver candelabra made with the casting technique, then chiseled and engraved entirely by hand. The base is square with scroll work, typical of the Baroque period, both in casting and engraved. Another round base has been welded onto the base which acts as a support for the "Fauna" The same fauna holds in its arms a "branch" always with a scroll design which has the function of the main stem, which supports the four arms of the candelabra. The candle holder and the wax collector are also cast, always finely chiseled. Made in Milan - Italy "by the silversmith "Mario Vallè," one of the most prestigious Italian silversmith workshops. FAUNA and Faunus (Fauna and Faunus) Ancient pair of Latin deities of pastoralism. Faunus is the god who favors the fertility of flocks (his name from the root of faveo) and preserves them from the attacks of wolves: hence the name of Luperci given to the priests of the god, of Lupercal to the original seat of his cult (a cave on the northern side of the Palatine), of Lupercalia to his main feast (February 15), and the epithet of Lupercus to the god himself. Faunus was also venerated as the genius of the woods who scares men at night with dreams and fearful apparitions (hence the name of Incubus); who makes known the future by means of the noises of the woods, the flight of birds or with dreams (hence his name of Fatuus, from fari). In the cult, Faunus soon declined in importance, especially following the ever-increasing role given to a god of humble origins, Silvanus (see), perhaps a hypostasis of Faunus himself. Identified with the Greek Pan (see), he became a simple mortal demigod and was confused with the crowd of Pani, Satyrs, and Nymphs. Soon his female counterpart, the very ancient Fauna, was also obliterated, whose original attribute of Bona Dea (see) became, at first, her proper name and was later assumed by the Greek goddess Damia, who entered Rome in the first half of the third century. Instead, the Lupercalia festivals, celebrated for the purpose of purification and fertility, continued in the official cult until the end of paganism: on December 5th, instead, the Faunalia festivals occurred, described by Horace in the 18th ode of the third book.
