A Rare Galician Brass Hanukkah Lamp, Poland Circa 1800

About the Item

This rare Galician brass Hanukkah lamp, crafted in Poland circa 1800, is an exquisite example of Jewish ceremonial art. The lamp features a symmetrical, openwork design with intricate details characteristic of 18th-19th century Galician craftsmanship. At its center is a prominent crown motif, symbolizing divine sovereignty, flanked by two heraldic lions representing strength and protection. The Hebrew inscription "נר חנוכה" (Ner Chanukah, meaning "Hanukkah Lamp") is prominently displayed within a shield-shaped medallion beneath the crown. The backplate's filigree-like design is both decorative and functional, allowing light to reflect beautifully. The lamp includes eight small oil holders along the base and two side candleholders, often used to hold the shamash (servant candle) or be used for the two candles lit on Sabbath Eve. Supported by elegantly curved legs, the structure is sturdy yet ornate, demonstrating a blend of utility and artistic expression. This piece not only reflects the religious significance of Hanukkah but also showcases the rich cultural heritage and skilled metalwork of Jewish artisans in Galicia during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its historical and artistic value makes it a treasured artifact in Judaica collections.
