About the Item

A stunning pair of most impressive large-scale 19th century Italian Baroque style carved giltwood candlesticks. Italy, circa 1825, ornate intricately detailed hand carved brilliant water gilded burnished reddish bole gessoed solid wood altar stick candlesticks, having elongated wooden pricket over circular candle platform, atop an elaborately decorated turned standard with fine acanthus leaf carvings, above tripartite base embellished with scroll accents, crests, and relief cartouches, rising on animal paw claw wrapped ball feet. Ideal tall size for use as floor standing or tabletop. PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION: Acquired from the reputable auction house, Dallas Auction Gallery, Design District, Dallas, Texas. Owned and curated by Reyne Hirsch, a long time media personality and expert in 20th century decorative arts. Hirsch was a top appraiser for Antiques Roadshow on PBS for 13 years. She's also a leading contributer to the Huffington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Architectural Digest, and other publications. Strong, sturdy, stable, structurally sound. Wear consistent with age, use, handling and exposure, including scattered nicks, chips, gilt losses and exposed gesso throughout, nothing that detracts from the display or functionality but only adds to the authenticity, sophisticated antique character, elegant romantic warmth, and opulent luxurious presence! Accomplished with two later oversized cylindrical orangish wax candles stamped Santa Rosa, both having dings, dents, small gouges, fissures, wear consistent with age and handling. -- Originally used for lighting and Christian church religious rituals, over the last century electric lighting has generally phased out candles in much of the world, candlesticks are still used in homes as timeless decorative elements, to add warmth and ambiance on special occasions, and for important ceremonial and spiritual purposes, these magnificent candlesticks are ready for their second life.
