Hilkka-Liisa Ahola Arabia Art Pottery Candle Holder

About the Item

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola (Finnish, 1920 – 2009) was one of Finland’s leading ceramicists during the 20th century. She joined Arabia with a six-month traineeship in 1943 and worked there until 1974. Characteristic of her work is her free, bold and expressive brushstrokes, with many of her designs including the use of blue hued floral motifs. In 1968 she was awarded Grand Prix, at the Faenza Ceramic Biennale. A stylish and fine hand-painted Finnish mid-century art pottery candleholder with seed pod designs by Hilkka-Liisa Ahola (Finnish, 1920-2009) and dating from around 1960. The bowl-shaped ceramic candleholder stands on a narrow round unglazed foot with a slightly recessed and glazed base with a trumpet shaped body with a wide round flat rim with a narrow central recess to fit and hold a candle securely, the rim catching the molten wax. The body of the candleholder is decorated in olive green glazes with the rim hand-painted with a seedpod and scroll work pattern thickly applied in tones of blue within a matt black surround. The candleholder is marked Arabia to the base and includes artists initials HLA for Hilkka-Liisa Ahola. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. Excellent condition with light wear associated with age and use.
